Texas Holdem Guide to Implied Odds

Implied odds are an extension of pot odds and is something you again use to help you decide on the correct decision. Pot odds takes into account the amount of money in the pot currently. Implied pot odds are an estimation of the amount of money you can expect to win if your draw hits, and this is what you base your decision on.

If you hit your draw and you expect to win a large amount of money then you have good implied odds. In contrast if you expect to win a small amount after hitting your draw then you have little or no implied odds. Certain situations present better implied odds than other. Below I will show you two examples:

Example 1: Good implied odds

Your hand: Guide to Implied odds card 7 of Spades Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card 9 of Diamonds  Flop: Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card Ace of Spades Holdem Guide to Implied odds, Implied odds card 6 of Hearts  Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card 8 of clubs

This open ended straight draw is a strong example of a good implied odds situation. You can expect to win money on future streets, due to the straight draw not being that obvious, making it harder for your opponent to read the strength of your hand.

Another scenario will be when someone has raised in front of you and you think your hand is good enough to re-raise them. You need to raise more than the minimum. Raising the minimum will not make them fold: I advise raising three times their original raise.

Example 2: Bad implied odds

Your hand:Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card 8 of Spades  Implied odds card King of Diamonds   Flop: Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card 5 of hearts  Holdem Guide to Implied odds, card 6 of Clubs  Holdem Guide to Implied odds, Implied odds card 7 of Spades

Now in this example again your holding a open ended straight draw however unlike the above example your implied odds are far worse. Due to there being an obvious straight draw on the board if you complete you draw on any future street, a scary board is going to be present meaning you are unlikely to make any money unless your opponent also holds a draw.

In essence in you think on later rounds of betting you will win more money, you can make calls where currently you are not recieving the correct odds to call. If you think on later streets you won win more, or much more money then you should stick with pot odds.
